Passion

Part of the reason I homeschool my boys is because I want them to have the time, space and freedom to explore their own passions. Certainly, children can be inspired in school. And certainly children can discover new opportunties and interests in school. But to really delve into a passion takes time. And true freedom to explore your own interests is seldom found in school. (Peer pressure, anyone?)

Three-year-old Jonathan is too young for school. He hasn't learned yet that classical music isn't cool or that boys aren't supposed to be interested in the arts. He has, however, discovered his passion.

  1. Jennifer, Homeschooling affords so much. Just because of this thing called passion, my oldest son supplements his income as an ornamental blacksmith and my second son apprenticed under a cabinet maker his senior year. Neither could they have done in a traditional school setting.

  2. You know they are looking for a new conductor for the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Perhaps Jonathan would be interested.

    That was awesome!

  3. Yes, passion is one of my top 100 reasons that I homeschool my two boys. This vidoe is a beautiful example of that. Thank you for sharing.

  4. That was so cute!!! He was actually keeping time most of the time, and he sped up and got more dramatic at the right moments. Fabulous!

  5. That is so great! I agree- one of the great things about homeschooling is our kids don;t have to 'lose their childhood dreams and passions' because classroom peers tell them it's not cool. My oldest went to public schoool for K an 1st. K was just 1/2 day- not a bog deal, but in 1st grade he started to no longer want to play with his little brothers, whom he always loved to play with, b/c he was learning to 'only play with kids his age', He'd say "they aren't 1st grade like me." That was a HUGE WARNING SIGN to me and a bit part of why we homeschooled after that. I saw his passion for learning and for loving others begin die- glad we got to it early and it all came back.

  6. Beautiful! Maybe it's the pregnancy hormones, but it made me cry. Passion is the right word for it. I love his sensitivity to the nuances of the music. And his joyful enthusiasm at the end. I look forward to seeing a live concert of his in about 20 years, if I can. (:
