Luckily for me (and you!), I'm a member of a fabulous group of writers who also happen to be parents. When one parent recently asked for book suggestions for her elementary school-aged son, the suggestions were fast and furious -- and so good that I'm passing them on to you. So good, in fact, that I'm only going to share their series recommendations with you today. We'll talk authors another time.
Here, then, a list of boy-approved book series:
Lemony Snicket and a Series of Unfortunate Events
A to Z Mysteries
Little House on the Prairie (start with Farmer Boy if you think your boys will object to the female protagonists)
The 39 Clues
Star Wars chapter books
Alex Rider
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Hardy Boys
Captain Underpants
The Secrets of Droon
If You Lived... historical series
Zac Power
Time Warp Trio
The Mysterious Benedict Society
Warriors or Seekers book series
The Keys to the Kingdom
Peter and the Starcatchers
Hank Zipzer
Inkheart triology
Have any series you'd like to add to the list?
My son also loved the Artemis Fowl series.
ReplyDeleteI keep a little ongoing list on my blog's sidebar, and the few I have that aren't here are: Guardians of Ga'Houle (owls rather than cats like Warriors), Spiderwick Chronicles (if Harry Potter was tolerated as not too scary, than this is fine), Capital Mysteries (by same author as A to Z Mysteries), Ranger's Apprentice (good enough for parents to read as well), and Deltora Quest. My homeschooled boys didn't care for Diary of a Wimpy Kid and didn't want to see the movie. Thanks for the list, there are a few I hadn't heard of before, and will certainly check out! We can never get enough good series around here! Ranger's Apprentice #8 is being read right now, as well as the Mysterious Benedict Society.
ReplyDeletegavin didn;t really read (past those Kindergarten easy beginner things) until 5th grade. He found the Animorphs series and just devoured them He's in 10th grade and still goes back and reads them.
ReplyDeleteWarriors series (you mentioned)was the series that Connor really interested in reading.
Lemony Snicket(mentioned here4) is what finally got Ki reading this year (7th grade- he was a bit slower to get reading than even Gavin)
great list! Here are two more that my older son liked:
ReplyDeleteMagyk, Flyte, etc (Septimus Heap)
and the Charlie Bone series.
Please take Inkheart off your list. It's terrible.
ReplyDeleteAdd manga. It's HUGE!
Skulduggary Pleasant series by Derek Landy. My son (9-and-a-half and a good reader) declares them the best books he's ever read.
ReplyDeleteGreat suggestions! My boys and I may never be at a loss for a read-aloud again. :)
ReplyDeleteMy boys have enjoyed many of the series already mentioned, but here are a few more:
ReplyDeleteThe Hungry City Chronicles by Philip Reeve
The Heir Chronicles by Cinda Williams Chima
Redwall Series by Brian Jacques
Farsala Trilogy by Hilari Bell
Pendragon Series by D.J. MacHale
Thanks for the ideas!
